With the recent implementation of Sonday System/Essentials for Tier 2 instruction, we thought it would be helpful to reiterate the district expectations for phonics instruction (all tiers). If you have any questions or need assistance, please let one of our literacy coaches or admin team know. Thank you for providing this crucial reading foundation for students in grades K-2 at Paine Elementary.
TCS Non-Negotiables for Phonics Instruction 2019-2020
Explicit and systematic Open Court lessons should be taught 15-20 minutes every day to the entire class (Tier 1) in grades K-2.
Tier 1 phonics instruction should include all of the components outlined in Open Court: dictation, word building, word lines (blending), sentence segmentation, decodable texts, manipulating sounds, wall cards chants, and other phonemic awareness activities. Teachers should utilize the script on the green and white cards.
Tier 2 interventions should include pre-teaching or reviewing of Tier 1 skills utilizing Open Court/ and or Sonday Essentials resources.
Tier 3 interventions should include one of the following: Sound Partners, Take Flight, or Sonday Systems 1 or 2, or Sonday Lets Play Learn.
Best practices in phonics instruction should include multi-sensory (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) activities. Students should trace letters (2 fingers) and touch spell.
All teachers will adhere to the Open Court phonics progression for their grade level.
