Duty Schedule - Proposed Changes & Feedback

We received a lot of feedback throughout the year on our duty schedule, and are working hard to make improvements.  Our first step in reviewing our current process was to examine the duty stations to see if any could be eliminated.  We determined that with our current morning procedure, all of the stations were necessary in order to properly supervise students.  In our efforts to develop a schedule that aligns with what is best for both students and teachers, we began thinking outside the box.  We explored another option that is successful in several other schools (both inside and outside of our district).   The following are the proposed changes to our duty schedule.

Morning Duty:
  • Upon arrival, students in grades 1-5 would sit outside their classroom (lining the halls) and read their books quietly, rather than going to the gym.
  • Kindergarten students would still go to the amphitheater in their respective building.
  • Classroom teachers in grades 1-5 would rotate through duty on their hall only. There are 5-6 teachers on each hall (which equates to 11 per wing).  The teachers assigned to the hall would develop a schedule where one teacher would sit out in the hall and supervise students each morning from 7:20 until the bell rings. This equates to 2 teachers per wing.  See example below.  Note: the expectation will be that the hallways will remain quiet, because students will be silently reading.
  • Kindergarten teachers would rotate through morning amphitheater duty in their respective building.
  • Special education teachers may either be added to "hallway" groups if necessary to make the schedule equitable.

Afternoon Duty:
  • In the afternoon, the two teachers who had morning duty on the wing (example: one on orange and one on green) would supervise the students exiting the wing until they have exited the boulevard.  The  afternoon duty stations for the north middle wing are indicated by the red dots on the map below.

Specialists and most Exceptional Education Teachers:
·        These teachers would rotate through the other morning duties such as lunchroom and bus ramp duty.  The frequency of duty would be the same for all teachers.

Benefits of the Proposed Duty Schedule Change:
·         Classroom teachers on each hall would have the flexibility in scheduling coverage for their hallway.
·         Teachers will be near their classrooms.
·         This will limit hallway traffic throughout the school.
·         Transition time for students will be reduced.
·         Instructional time will be maximized.
·         Students could work on unfinished work in hallway if teacher deems necessary (due to close proximity).
·         Consistency with the students teachers are supervising
·         Opportunities for teacher/student relationship building will be enhanced
·         The frequency of duty would be the same for all teachers (and consistent with last year).

Please click on the the survey link below to provide feedback.  You will select one of the following:  1) I would like for us to try to proposed duty schedule, 2) I would like to keep the same type of procedure and schedule we had last year,  3) I have another idea I would like for us to explore.
PLEASE RESPOND TO THE SURVEY BY FRIDAY, JUNE 29th.
